A deep stillness in the thickest part of the wood, undisturbed except by the occasional dropping of the snow from the holly boughs.

The very cold weather persisted from January, but whilst torrential rain brought an increase in temperatures last month, gale force westerlies accompanied the heavy rain on both the 5th and 6th. Sunny interludes with the thermometer reaching double figures, as the wind abated and veered to the south west hinted at calmer weather but a second week of heavy overnight rain was soon replaced by some hard frosts.

The foggy conditions on the 15th lingered all day and on the 19th a hoar frost was more in evidence on the trees and hedgerows rather than providing a white coat purely on the dormant grass.

Snow came and went as rapidly as it arrived during the latter part of February and even the sun made a rare appearance.
